MONTHLY SUMMARY NOTES OF WEATHER OBSERVATIONS IN ANSTY VILLAGE
Weather Report – MARCH 2024, for Ansty Village Parish, from the Ansty weather observer!
March 1st started where February left off: with a spell of frontal rain as low pressure continued to dominate England.
Most of the rain fell overnight on the 1st clearing to give a day of sunny spells and a shower or two. The following day saw a repeat performance but much less showery activity during the day and most places remained dry.
Sunday 3rd was a lovely sunny day after a sharp frost. Another wave front crossed our region on the 4th, keeping a cool showery airstream until a developing anticyclone over Scandinavia killed it off, bringing in marginally drier air off the continent with sun breaking through. Cold nights though.
A couple of pleasant days followed but the anticyclone soon collapsed and drifted east allowing Atlantic depression and fronts to start crossing the UK again.
Saturday 9th saw a change of air and a damp start and heralded another week of relatively unsettled weather with weak weather fronts bringing light showery rain passing over and becoming milder too! Some warm sunny spells for a while on the 14th
A cloudier regime became established once more with more overnight rain on the 17th with similar days following. The 17th – 21st was a very mild period with temperatures approaching an almost warm 17 C on the 20th. The 22nd saw a cold front sweeping down from the north bringing a short cooler showery spell for most.
The last week of March saw really unsettled weather with depressions and fronts crossing west to east, and rainfall amounts racked up over the days, bringing the threat of local flooding once again. It was cool as well especially when hefty showers passed over!
Some of the rain had bits of sleet and hail mixed in – all caused by the main jet stream being well to the south of the UK which split drawing in masses of mild moist air to collide with cooler maritime air. This resulted in very turbulent conditions in the atmosphere – responsible for the heavy pulses of showery rain.
Heavy snow fell in parts of Devon as Storm Nelson hit the UK on Thursday 28th March. The Spanish-named storm brought winds of up to 70mph to parts of England on Thursday, including 50mph gusts in London. Ansty received copious amounts of rain on the same day. Indeed, Thursday March 28th was particularly horrible – miserable and wet with heavy pulses of rain slashing across; some thunder was heard, and it was especially windy in the afternoon. By now the depression causing this had been named ‘Storm Nelson’. Now I seem to remember that character adorned the near back pages of the Eagle comic back in the mid-1950s!
The Easter weekend of March was a little more settled with some sunshine, but heavy rain returned on the evening of the 31s.
In the end the figures speak for themselves. The mean monthly average temperature was 7.7 C which is 1. 2 C deg above the long-term average – so another ‘warm month’. We only had 6 nighttime frosts – and a couple of them were quite sharp. Low pressure dominated the month once again with 21 days of recorded rainfall – which amounted to 6.15 inches (155.2 mm) – more than double the long-term average! We had a couple of windy days: the 1st and the 28th.
Will April put an end to this wet moist regime we have had for so long? I am afraid we are still not out of the wet woods yet!

Rainfall: Monthly total: 6.15 ins (156 mm) LTA 2.64 ins (67.1 mm); Wettest day: 0.92 ins (23.4mm) 28th; Number of days when it rained: 21 (measurable rain!)
Sunshine recorded: 11 days.
Night (Air) Frosts recorded: 6
Average monthly atmospheric pressure: 1005 mb (low pressure dominated the month throughout)
Average monthly humidity: 90.5% High humidity.
Average monthly wind speed: 3.2 mph (5.1 km/h); Highest wind gust: 32.4 mph (52.13 km/h) on the 28th . These figures would be easily doubled for more exposed locations in the Parish of Ansty. March was quite breezy during the second half of the month.
